“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone” ~ Pablo Picasso
Harsh enough words for you? But that essentially is it! We somehow can find a plethora of excuses to delay putting into action things that will improve our lives, change our outcomes for the better, and bring good to the world. For many of us procrastination might as well be our middle name ~ there is a list of opportunities in front of us that, with a little effort, if we put in motion, would change the score, generate positive momentum, and ultimately deliver us from evil. However, we simply choose the lazy alternative to ignore the obvious and do what we have always done – nothing!
To emphasize this point, we spoke with someone a short while back. After the customary greetings our conversation changed to the state of the economy and specifically the economy in the area the person was in. He emphasized to us the need to make some money and was willing to look at an opportunity that makes sense. Before describing the opportunity he told us that he was humble and was always willing to learn. However, when the conversation evolved around what the person needed to do to be successful the feedback was; “I don’t like to work directly myself, I want others to do the work for me!” The humble part it turns out was simply a branding event and the rest, in fact, okay as long as he did not have to get off his ass. This person is really not that different however from the majority of the population out there.
It appears to come down to a psychological impairment, or more aptly a lifetime of telling ourselves that there is safety in quiet mediocrity. Somehow we are able to convince ourselves (or at least we have become creatures of banal habit) that not rising to the occasion is okay. Okay for us, okay for the others in our lives and okay for the world. Content, it appears, to deny the world with any chance to tap into our greatness.
Why then do we continue to put the things off we know we could do to change our lives for the better day after day, year after year? Why are we afraid to step into a world of unlimited potential and endless possibilities? Has our humanness become the bane of our existence? We don’t do things simply because we can choose not to?
Let’s look at another species, say insects, the wonderful ant does not have the option of not pursuing the fallen chunk of bread. Her sense of smell alerts her that food is at hand and she is driven to find it, collect it and trudge it home. We humans however, appear to have lost this drive. We are presented with a version of fallen bread, can see the benefit of pursuing it, we even can analyze the 27 benefits it might bring to us and the people in our lives, however, we simply choose to let it pass. It’s too darn easy to wait for the crumbs to fall off our neighbours plate or to be handed out on the street corner. The problem is our neighhbours are getting ornery and the free giveaways are being saved for the truly needy. Eventually everyone of us will have to get up off the couch and deliver some bacon of our own.
With this reality upon us, many of us continue to pretend that nothing has changed, and most importantly that nothing will change for us. Are we that ignorant, are we that stupid, or have we simply reconciled ourselves to a slow death with our head firmly buried in the sand.
Yet another example is a lady who is living with an income that does not provide her with any additional money to spend or more importantly save for a rainy day. Instead of capitalizing on an opportunity she decides to procrastinate and as all victims do, make excuses about taking control of her life. When asked where would she be in 3 years financially if nothing changed, she admitted in the same position she was when the question was asked. 18 months down the road this lady has not moved on changing anything in her life and as such is doing the same thing over and over again until she cannot do it anymore. Then what?
Also, a gentlemen, who is introduced to an opportunity to move out of his job and produce a different life simply states “I just don’t have it in me!” REALLY?
There is another option. One that has been in front of us since the day we were born ~ it’s called taking matters into our own hands, stepping into our power and doing something on our own. If you are ready for this, choose to get off your ass and take action. It’s that simple!
